Morton where founded in 1874 making them one of Scotland’s oldest clubs. Like most clubs of that generation (that is, before Rangers and Celtic became the behemoths they are today), Morton’s best period was in the earlier part of the century. In 1922 they got to the final of the Scottish Cup where they beat Rangers then repeated the trick in 1948 (also against Rangers) but ended up the on the losing side. The game had gone to a replay after the first game ended in a 1-1 draw. Notably, the two games where played in front of a combined crowd of 265,258. Morton’s last appearance in a final was fifteen years later in 1963 when they narrowly lost 5-0 in front of 103,000 supporters.
Now in their second season back in the First Division, Greenock Morton played in the Scottish Premier league between 1978 and 1983, and again in 1985 and 1988. In 2001/02 the club plumbed new depths when they where relegated to the Third Division, but only for one season; the narrowly won the division and stayed in the Second Division for four more years before they won promotion to the First Division as champions in 2006/07. They finished 8th last season. Expect more of the same this season.
